Mayweather Jr. accuses HBO commentators of racial bias

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Recently retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. accused the American pay-TV channel Home Box Office of bias against him and other black fighters.

Mayweather, a 31-year-old former Olympic bronze medalist from Grand Rapids, told the Grand Rapids Press in an interview Friday that HBO "is great," but criticized its boxing analysts.

"They talk about Kelly Pavlik, a white fighter, like he's the second coming. Or they go crazy over Manny Pacquiao. But I'm a black fighter," Mayweather said. "Is it racial? Absolutely. They praise white fighters, they praise Hispanic fighters, whatever. But black fighters, they never praise."

HBO and Showtime are the two major American pay-TV channels that televise many of the high-profile boxing matches.

"I've noticed it for a long time but I couldn't say anything because I had to do business with them. I'll still do business with them, but I'm done holding my tongue."

HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg said in a statement that the network, which has carried many of Mayweather's bouts, was disappointed to hear of the boxer's remarks and denied his claims.

"Floyd is a tremendous athlete who gave his all to the sport. We have nothing but admiration for what he accomplished in the ring," Greenburg said. "His remarks regarding HBO broadcasters and executives are unfortunate and we could not disagree more."

Mayweather gave the interview on the first day of a three-day retirement celebration in downtown Grand Rapids. He abruptly retired last month at the peak of his athletic skill and earning power.

"I'm happy. I feel clear. I feel free as a bird," he told the newspaper. "I feel good that I can finally speak out, and say the things I want to say."

Mayweather retired afer a remarkable 18-month stretch in which he beat Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, made more than $50 million in the ring and became a bankable celebrity outside it.

In the past year alone, Mayweather has appeared on the American television show Dancing With the Stars, worked on his record label, served as the honorary starter at the Indianapolis 500 automobile race and entered the wrestling ring for a choreographed tussle.

"pound for pound, the best fighter in the world."  My God, if that's not a statement laced with racial hatred, I don't know what is.

That's some of the most insensitive and derogatory rhetoric I've ever had the displeasure of listening to.  Where in the Hell does HBO get off saying some shit like that?  How could HBO even look Mayweather in t

How can that piece of sh*t say that HBO is racially biased?  They carried many of his fights and in every one of those fights praised him as the best pound for pound fighter in the world.  They carried many Bernard Hopkins fights and talked about him being possibly one of the best middleweight fighters in the history of boxing.  Back when Roy Jones Jr. wasn't washed up, they talked ...(more)

I feel racism will always dominate society in every sector.  Obviously Floyd came to his senses and called HBO out on something that Sugar Ray Leonard and George Foreman stated when they worked for HBO.  Let's get real, white america will never like or love anyone that is not white. But, you can always get respect from anyone or anything if you have dignity and pride.  ...(more)

First of all, Kelly is a great fighter. When he won the belt the first time, I can remember watching the match and announcers were not really giving him much of a chance. Even in the rematch which I picked Kelly, they still thought he would get beat. It wasnt until he won the rematch that he begun to get favored in his bouts. Second Kelly is fun to watch. He is hard nose fighter who can KO with th ...(more)

30 pounds of monkey crap in a 5 pound bag! (to quote Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson)

I know Floyd is only "keepin' it real" by partaking of holy communion in the cult of victimhood.  I'm surprised the fact that HBO in particular, and boxing in general has made him a freakin' gazillionaire doesn't take him to a happier place.  (I've seen that ...(more)

I've watched many a fight on HBO, and completely disagree with Floyd's assesment that the network praises only white and Latin fighters, while ignoring black fighters.

Like pretty much every other boxing network, publication, website, etc., HBO, based on what I've seen and heard, regarded Floyd as what he was...the best pound for pound fighter in the worl ...(more)

I'm so sick of this race card bullcrap.  Give it a rest.  You aren't even in Boxing anymore so shut the hell up!  Poor Mayweather the victim as always, go to hell.  Pound for pound the biggest crybaby in boxing.
